This is the one that may have raised your eyebrow, 'how the H do I quantify my spirituality and happiness level?' Good question, honestly I don't know, its different for everyone. But I have learned the hard way. When you allow a dissonance to manifest in your soul it can have extremely deleterious consequences. A cancerous relationship or withheld foregiveness to a loved one impedes many other aspects of what you do and who you are. Please believe me, it is crazy how invasive it can really be. There have been recent connections with autoimmune disorders such as psoriasis and bad relationships with nuclear family members.
I have recently begun to practice Qi Gong with certified instructor Cori Bruckner who is also a licensed acupuncturist aside from being an amazing individual. After the first session, I was immediately displeased with myself, that it took me 29 years to finally find this! Its been shown through history that individuals who meditate and practice some form of spiritual cleansing have lowered blood pressure scores, less total stress and therefore decreased health problems and live longer more rewarding lives. Even more, 20 minutes of deep mediation can equate to two hours of restorative sleep.
Sleep is THE bodies stress management system, detoxification, restoration, anabolic (growth), time. If you miss out on sleep, you miss out on everything, its just that simple. We will really dive into this in upcoming posts.
Sleep is one of the four major factors contributing to obesity. Roughly 72% of the population suffers from improper sleep, whether it total time, depth or both. Can you guess what the obesity rate is? Somewhere between 72-74%, weird.Don't believe me? Test it out for yourself. Go to the gym & perform a Max Effort (the most you can lift for a given number of reps, lets say 3) workout on a big lift, such as front squat, bench, chinup or deadlift after a night of great sleep, record your scores. Then wait six days. The night before you try to beat your score pull an all nighter and see what happens.
If the body is not properly rested and restored then its automatically weakened. The fact is that we could all use more proper sleep & restoration! Try and practice this technique every week, on Sunday, is family day/technology free day. No texts, facebook or any other distractions period, disconnect. In all reality I highly doubt my grandkids are going to care how awesome my facebook and twitter content is, #fail.
WRITE THIS DOWN: Respect the spirit. There are many forms of religion, spirituality, mediation and release. Understand and believe that there is one that is right for you. Whether it be organized religion, nature hikes, or Qi Gong use them as your non-negotiably necessary release time to reset/refuel your tank. If you don't receive 8-10 hours nightly of high quality restorative, cadaver-like sleep, its time to get the detectives pad out and solve the mystery.
